There are many types of hydroponic systems and all have significant differences.  There are pros and cons to each and we have outlined those below.  Enjoy…

Deep Water Culture [DWC]

Deep Water Culture [DWC] is a type of hydroponic growing method by suspending the plant roots in a solution of nutrient-rich, oxygenated water. There are many variations of this technique, know as:

  • Bubbleponics:  Refers to the oxygenation of the water in the system.  This is the most basic of all hydroponic systems and a great way to learn.
  • Raft System DWC:  The plants are housed in a floating “raft” above the water.  The roots are continuously submerged in oxygen rich water.  This method is often used in aquaponics.

  • Deep Water Current Culture: The water in the DWC system is recirculated for increased oxygenation and faster growth compared to standard bubbleponics.

Ebb & Flow [Flood & Drain]

Ebb and Flow is known for its simplicity, reliability and low initial investment. Pots or containers are filled with a hydroponic medium that anchors the roots and functions as a temporary reserve of water and nutrients. The hydroponic solution alternates by flooding the system and is then followed by draining (ebb) away the solution to allow for proper oxygenation of the root zone.

The type of medium will determinate the frequency of flood time or watering durations. The rooting medium will require washing to remove root debris and accumulated mineral salts as well as sterilization before reuse by means of a plant friendly cleaner.  This method is commonly used for aquaponic growing systems.

Aeroponics

Aeroponics is the technique of growing plants in an air or mist environment without the use of soil or soilless medium.  Unlike other hydroponics, which uses a liquid nutrient solution as a growing medium and essential minerals to sustain plant growth; aeroponic systems are utilized without a growing medium.

The plants are usually suspended in air and sprayed with a nutrient water solution.  The results are extremely fast growth and higher yields.  Aeroponics are usually more expensive and harder to maintain than other hydroponic systems, but can be the most rewarding.  There are modifications that some grower make to increase the pressure of the system to be considered a High-pressure Aeroponics System.  This will deliver the nutrients with a higher concentration of oxygen in the root zone.
